Wines worthy of a special mention

Anyone who saw The Sunday Times on 7th June 2009 would have seen Jane MacQuitty write up on wine blends. She went on to mention a number of wines that we sell here at Dunell's.

She wrote 'Australian winemakers are so obsessed with blending that they create multiregional blends by transporting grape varieties and wine hundreds of miles across states. One Aussie appellation, South Eastern Australia, comprises three states rolled into one: Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. The latter is home to the Barossa Valley and St Hallett’s brilliant, zesty, lemon meringue pie-stashed 2008 Poacher’s Blend, a semillon-sauvignon-riesling mix, and its red partner, the 2008 Gamekeeper’s Reserve, a hefty, clove and creosote-spiked shiraz, grenache and touriga combo. Add a few more grapes and a move to the Clare Valley and you get 2008 Pikes White Mullet, a delicious, aromatic, exotic, lime-layered white'.

Click on the images for more information. We currently have the 2007 vintages of the St Hallett wines but they are both drinking superbly and what's more, they are currently on Summer Sizzler promotion. Save yourself 20% on these wines!

The Live Magazine - Mail on Sunday 14.06.09

If you have bought The Mail on Sunday today, you will see a great article in the Live Magazine on finding cheaper alternatives to the great wine classics. On page 28 you will see that if you fancy a good Sancerre but not the price, Olly Smith (from TV's Saturday Kitchen) has chosen the Springfield Estate Special Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2008. He writes 'Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre revels in its fame but this South African number is like a grapefruit harnessed to the power of a F1 car - intense and powerfully zippy.'

Catena Alamos Chardonnay receives great recognition!

Received an email today from the lovely Mariela at Catena Winery, Argentina, to give us the following news:

Mariela wrote- 'I wanted to share with you the latest accolades given to Alamos Chardonnay 2008 by The Wine Gang (Anthony Rose, Tim Atkin, Johana Simon, Tom Cannavan, Olly Smith)

'Catena Alamos Chardonnay 2008 - Top value from the house of Catena! Posh Burgundian nose with further Burgundian nuance on the palate. It's deft and with well-judged oak and at seven quid one of the best examples of this style of mildly oaked Chardonnay with peachy crisp fruit. Fabulous with creamy fish dishes. Score 88/100 and one of this month's Bunch of Five Best Value Wines'

Come and meet Sami Ghosn from Tanaïl Winery, Lebanon on Saturday 6th June from 11am to 4pm!

Come and meet Sami Ghosn from Tanaïl Winery, Lebanon who makes the fantastic ‘Massaya’ wines on Saturday 6th June from 11am to 4pm.

Massaya is situated in Tanaïl, the heart of the Bekaa Valley, home to some of the oldest and most original motifs of ancient wines and wine-making. The Bekaa is once again proving it can produce great wines and Massaya, whose name is Arabic for the delicate beauty of the Bekaa’s twilight, with its French and Lebanese partners is proud to perpetuate this ancient tradition. Massaya bottles 5 wines per vintage: 1 rosé, 1 whites and 3 reds.

Massaya is a partnership of true pedigree. The wines are made by Sami Ghosn and his brother but the winery was set up with help from their friends at Château Cheval Blanc, Château Angélus and Château Le Vieux Télégraphe.

All five wines will be available for tasting and we are delighted to offer a discount on all purchases and orders taken on the day. This offer is for ONE DAY ONLY and is only available in-store.

This is such a fantastic opportunity to meet Sami. He is a wonderfully charismatic man who makes these outstanding wines!

Wines on tasting are:

Tanaïl Winery Classic Red 'Massaya' 2005
This is a rich yet very elegant wine with morello cherry, cassis and spice to the fore. £8.95 per bottle
